Quick – can you name a movie that has Ben Stiller, Patrick Swayze, Helen Hunt, Liam Neeson, Bill Paxton, and Adam Baldwin in it? Probably not, as most people can’t, and what a shame. “Next Of Kin” is a pretty portrayal of the “Eastern Mountain Device” as well as the adore of family and the bond of brothers.
I enjoyed this movie greatly. Although the state has been somewhat rehashed many times the performances here scurry emotion. Especially Liam Neeson’s. If not for his performance in this movie I probably would have given it 4 stars, but he shines brightly here. The loyalty and savor of his character combined with the contempt and arouse of his character, what a grand performance.
When this movie first came out I didn’t even know it. I don’t know how it fell off the radar hide before ever being noticed but it is cerainly worth a ogle.

In terms of objective pure area, Next of Kin is — in many ways — a typical example of the unconventional cop vs. the mob film genre of the 1980s…However, if Next of Kin is ultimately a genre portion, its smooth a better-than-average example of the what the genre is obedient of. Certainly, its probably the only film ever made by Patrick Swayze that can legitimately be called underrated.
Plotwise, the film sounds almost like a parody. Patrick Swayze is a broken-down hillbilly from Appalacia Country who has left gradual his rustic family to become a titanic city cop and to romance sophisticated music teacher Helen Hunt. (Is there a reason why vast city cops with simple backgrounds always seem to ruin up romancing music teacers in these films? ) Swayze’s younger brother Bill Paxton also comes to the city, to pursue a life of petty crime that ends up getting him killed by mobster Adam Baldwin which leads to yet another Swayze brother coming down to the city, this one played by Liam Neeson. As Neeson seeks revenge, Swayze is forced to return to his roots in order to avenge both his brother and protect his girlfriend.
Yet somehow, all of this works rather effectively on hide. The film is directed by Englishman John Irvin who has made a rather unsung career out of bringing a stronger-than-usual sense of characterization to genre films (the best example being the war film Hamburger Hill) . Although Irvin’s filming of the action scenes are a cramped pedestrian, he detached has a strong visual sense and manages to vividly inequity the conflicting worlds of the country and the city. The film’s supporting cast is well chosen and both the heroes and the villians all near to life with a surprising amount of dignity. At no point do any of the actors demean their roles by playing …typical hillybillys or, for that matter, …typical mobsters and that shows an recent and admirable amount of integrity for a film of this sort. Paxton isn’t on mask long but remains, as always, a likeable presence and Adam Baldwin makes a compellingly understandable and hissable villian. Michael J. Pollard shows up as a hillbilly and brings his trademark quirkiness to the proceedings while the role of the nerdy mob scion is played by Ben Stiller, of all people. Its a microscopic jarring to notice Stiller prove up on veil (especially playing an essentially villianous role) yet he gives a strong performance without resorting to do any standard Stiller bits. Helen Hunt’s role is …typical but she’s probably far warmer in this role than she’s been in any of her prestige pictures. Certainly, the best performance in the film is given by Liam Neeson who dominates the proceedings with the grim sincerity he brings to his quest for revenge. This Irish actor also manages to perfectly assume the original accent of the Appalacian space. As an actor, Patrick Swayze has always been small and he’s always been better at projecting sincerity than complexity. Luckily, his role in Next of Kin has been designed to require slight more of him than sincerity and, if Next of Kin doesn’t recount his best performance, its certainly his most likeable.

Next of Kin isn’t a big film. As stated before, the yarn is a tad bit too predictable and that’s only made more sure when the yarn is populated by a better-than-average cast and directed by a truly talented director. However, this is a rare genre share in which it is clear that everyone eager actually save in their best efforts to perform a worthwhile film and the results are both admirable and sharp.

Seasons One and Two were hilarious and, judged by those pre-set standards, I couldn’t assist feeling that Season Three came out of the gate a diminutive sluggishly. Was creator-writer Graham Linehan (of “Father Ted” fame) coasting objective a limited?

The first four episodes – From Hell, Are We Not Men?, Tramps like Us, and Speech – all succeed on their contain terms and have plenty of laughs. Episode six starts with Roy finagling his map into the photography assignment for a nude charity calendar – only to leer the assignment morph into something that could haunt him for life.

If you enjoyed Seasons One and Two of The IT Crowd, you won’t want to miss Season Three.
If you’re original to the reveal and want to sample a 22-minute burst, then begin with Friendface and reboot from there.
This is one of those amazingly droll shows that perform me laugh like crazy. It is definitely in my top 5 list! 
While some episodes are funnier than others, each episode has at least one really ample laugh in it. The type of stuff that you exercise the next few days giggling about whenever you remember the scene. I honest really adore it.
Hopefully, they will fabricate a fourth season, since I already miss it.

My three stars are based on the following–four stars for this memorable film–two stars for the characterize and sound quality of the DVD. Some of the other reviewers will mediate my technical “two stars” to be reliable, and I will not argue with
them.

I first saw this landmark sci/fi classic when I was younger than Jimmy Hunt, the lead actor in “Invaders”. Like many other “baby boomers”, I remember the experience very well. It wasn’t the Martians who bothered me–it was the understanding that your acquire loving parents could suddenly become so “different”, not to mention friends and neighbours. This is a very homely premise that reached its peak a couple of years later in the novel “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.
Inevitably, the film is now dated in a number of ways–the “zippers” on the backs of the Martians are often mentioned–but it serene has power too. First of all, Jimmy Hunt’s performance–here is a child actor who is totally believable, and his efforts to convince people of the unthinkable are compelling. Children who are not taken seriously–an old-fashioned theme that is level-headed relevant. Arthur Franz and Helena Carter are standard 50s leads, sympathetic but bland, but explore out for Leif Erickson as our hero’s “Dad”–the scene where he comes wait on home a “changed man” collected packs a wallop ( literally as well as figuratively ) .

As others have celebrated, Menzies gave this film a terrific” look–that hill with the broken fence, the swirling sand, the outlandish music–this is an image that has stayed with me most of my life.
The “Martian Brain” may sight a minute uncouth today, but the opinion of satisfactory intelligence is a mainstay in science fiction, and this creature has numerous filmic descendants–the “brainy alien” in “Independence Day”, another more unusual “invasion” comes to mind.
One jam I have always had with this movie–and it is a accepted experience in 50s sci/fi films–is an excessive reliance on stock footage. I guess it helped with the budget, but all those “military training” films that are woven into the sage could have been edited. OK–the troops are coming to kick Martian butt–we earn it!
It is qualified to say that this is one of the most influential sci/fi movies of all time. Upright it does not compare in quality to some other 50s classics–”The Day the Earth Stood Aloof “,
“The War of the Worlds”, “Forbidden Planet” for example. Nevertheless, it is a movie that is embedded in the consciousnesses of many people of my generation–the saucer landing, the petrified petite boy, the unusual hill where people disappear–all quite unforgettable.
Sadly, I must agree with the negative reviews of this DVD’s recount quality–when you mention “50th Anniversary Special Edition” etc. and witness that the company responsible is Image–you have high expectations. I did not anticipate so many lines and general “wear and scuttle”. If this was the best print available, it is unhappy. If anything, the nice shroud and the absorbing booklet add to the disappointment of the disc itself.
Bottom line–even with the visual shortcomings of the DVD, no serious sci/fi collector can leave this title out of his or her collection.
I was very mad when this DVD came out, having some time ago bewitch a cheap copy from one of those bargain-DVD companies. And while this is certainly an improvement over the grainy print I owned, I have to say I’m a diminutive disappointed that the film serene isn’t in expansive shape. A noble piece of the outdoor scenes are pleasing sunless, making it hard at times to snarl what is going on. Some scratches and minor imperfections are to be expected (even though, with today’s film restoration technology, I contemplate even these can be fixed) . And to be resplendent, this was a low-budget film that may never have looked that big. I guess I was impartial hoping for more.

Now, a word about the two versions of the film on this disc. I don’t want to give away the ending(s) to anyone who hasn’t seen it, but let’s fair say the current U.S. ending has been considered by many fans to be a “cop out” ending. The British version does away with that, as well as the ridiculously long montage that proceeds it. But here’s an queer thing: I unruffled judge I take the more ambigious U.S. ending. It’s unbiased more…I don’t know….FUN.
So maybe this is the best version of INVADERS FROM MARS we’ll ever catch. It’s a fun movie, a minor classic of the beloved genre of 50’s sci-fi films. But it does in fact pale (both the film itself and the transfer) beside other acknowledged classics of that era.

HEROES and LOST are the 2 more ambitious gargantuan scale Sci-Fi series on today’s TV. They both have in favorite ravishing visuals spiked by well executed special effects, relentless action, a lot of it brutal and violent, interesting account lines occasionally hinting critically at today’s social and political realities (government-sponsored torture, the erosion of liberties, the roles played by titanic and secretive transnational corporations), huge casts of vast actors and the promise of getting at some core secret that would define ‘everything’ but which is always elusive.

Of the two, HEROES seemed to be on the verge of self-dissolution last year, following a promising Season One. I am jubilant to scrutinize the series wait on on track with a vengeance on Season Three.

HEROES Third season easily tops the first two seasons as the core that survived the frantic struggles of Seasons One and Two understand that ‘normal life’ is not possible for those blessed or cursed with elegant powers, not when a government that’s jealously trying to absorb its fill monopoly on violence is after them and not when there are so many opportunities to ’save the world’. The situation slowly shifts focus from the first 2 seasons’ “HEROES vs. the Company” to their constant running and hiding from a secret branch of ‘Homeland Security’ sure to wipe them out but not before doing a puny torture and experimentation on them. Not that what we would politically correctly call ‘people with abilities’ are all angels. Most of them are not and the struggle continues between the friendly and the unpleasant ones where the agreeable ones sometimes turn wicked and some of the heinous ones turn ‘good’, permanently or only for an episode or two but, interestingly, the outmoded ‘company’ staff seems to be taking sides between the government and the HEROES and a lot of the area is driven by their shifting loyalties and what appear to be their absorb personal agendas.
I hope I will be forgiven but I really don’t wish to give away any of the plot’s twists and turns because… this season’s HEROES is THAT favorable. It’s also possible that most have already watched many or all the episodes on TV and already have an idea on what HEROES 3 was about. It’s probably a lot more productive to discuss the Blu-ray edition which I shall.
My conclusion on ‘content’ – following the somewhat disappointed ‘amputated’ Season Two, this Season is a proper treat.
- PACKAGING
To my surprise, after being despicable by some other very tightly packed seasons, this Blu-ray box is quite tall. While the 25 episodes where squeezed on only 5 disks, the box is thicker than I expected. On the determined side, the disks seem to be held securely in set by a fresh and innovative locking mechanism.
There isn’t anything other than the disks in the box but brief summaries for each of the 25 episodes can be found on both the serve side and on the interior wall that does not absorb disks. The folding carton that holds the disks slides inside a cardboard sleeve.
- Recount AND SOUND
As expected, it’s 1080p video, 16:9 or 1.78:1 – meaning ‘full screen’ on an HD TV site, no top and bottom bands. Some of the extra features may be in lower resolutions.
The Sound is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 with English Dolby Digital 2.0 on the features.
- PRESENTATION AND PLAY
The episodes, about 42 minutes each, hasten for discontinuance to 18 hours.
The menu is relatively well designed but it’s not perfect. The ‘Play’ option will play all episodes on a specific disk but, at least on my PS3, it could not resume play once interrupted. It was not possible to do a ‘play all but begin from the second episode’. To do so, one would initiate with ‘Play’, then hasty forward or press the chapter skip button to near the desired initiate point. Or episodes could be played individually. Individual episodes are not broken into ’scenes’ in the menu.
During play, one can assume arrive of U-Control which can be turned on or off by pressing one of the colored buttons. During playback, Relate in Relate provides cast and crew commentaries. I found this distracting and I was jubilant to discover that it’s possible to play the same commentaries separately from the menu. The other U-Control enhancement is the availability of Hero Connections ‘post it’ like notes that pop on the cover and provide some information about a specific character that’s meaningful within the context of the scene that’s playing at the time. Each disk allows for the viewing of the updated Connections network separately from playback.
BD-Live allows for the downloading of a Season 4 preview and, being ‘live’, it’s possible that more features may become available in time.
One annoying defect, at least on a PS3 is the playback becoming unresponsive once the Universal veil saver kicks in. After that, it’s impossible to resume watching – pressing play/pause/fast-forward would return ‘this feature is not available at this time’ and pressing Terminate would procure me out of the movie and force me to reload the disk.
- SPECIAL FEATURES
They are quite few and thin for this season and many are unpleasant enough to almost heinous into the ‘unwatchable’ territory. After being rank with treats such as the story/legend of Takezo Kensei on Season 2, this season’s disappoint. There are the obligatory ‘behind the scenes’ interviews but there is very itsy-bitsy as far as ‘creative content’ is concerned. The short Pinehearst Commercial reminded me of the similar feature we watched while waiting to enter the Terminator 3-D explain at the Universal Studios park in Florida and the Alternate Stories features are so abominable, one wonders how they made it even as ‘extra’ features. Same for the Deleted Scenes – clearly, they were deleted for a profitable reason and watching them proves the director’s wisdom not to include them.

Heroes season three is not unpleasant like many people say it is. It’s definitely not the best television out there, but it’s at least better than the awful second season the prove suffered from. This review is very spoiler heavy, so only search for at the star ratings I give each volume if you haven’t seen them. Instead of writing gargantuan paragraphs for each volume, I’ll impartial give a list of what I liked and didn’t like about this season and the individual volumes:
VOLUME THREE: VILLAINS – 3 stars
VOLUME FOUR: FUGITIVES – 4 stars
SEASON THREE
The good:
- This season expanded the the role and depth of secondary characters like Ando, Angela Patrelli, and Sandra Bennet. These characters are well acted and usually counter-act tiresome decisions made by the main characters. Example: Hiro creates a dreary belief to procure one half of The Formula from The Haitian. Hiro gets the attention of the Haitian to open his notion, but Ando unbiased sneaks up gradual The Haitian and knocks him out.
- Claire matures and becomes stronger as the season goes on, and it’s a agreeable change from the ditsy cheerleader she’s been for the past two volumes. She is less reliant on HRG to protect her, and can consume care of herself aesthetic well by the waste.
- The heroes consume their powers more often than they did in the previous volume, Generations, and this makes season three a lot more racy. It gives you a better feel that they actually do have powers.
- Sylar was humanized in this season. In volume three, Sylar was shown glimpses of a normal life with a loving family. In volume four, Sylar goes on a personal quest to derive his father and perceive why he’s so messed up. Sylar was no longer a terrible guy fair for the sake of needing a dreadful guy, and it showed that he honest wanted to be loved by someone this whole time.
- This season was more action packed than Generations, and has a couple fights that kept me on the edge of my seat. I was a disappointed that there were no narrative battles, but the fights they did have made noble expend of the abilities everyone had.
- The characters began to expect if the means to clarify the ends. Many times the characters do gray things to carry out their goals, and it’s involving to recognize how they react.
The bad:
- Nathan’s family is completely forgotten. This could have added a spacious conflict within his character like it did in season one, but the writers don’t seem to like them at all. Claire’s boyfriend West was completely forgotten about too. No one ever mentions them, and they never explain up. They’re not even succor in the unusual fifth volume.
- This season reused mature state devices from the previous seasons arrangement too powerful. How many comics did Isaac Mendez paint and write before he was killed? Does everyone and their mom have the ability to paint the future? How many flashback episodes are we going to have? Oh, and Heroes tricks you into thinking Nathan died… AGAIN. That’s three times by now. These are particularly annoying in volume three, but Heroes begin curious away from them in volume four. There were also diagram too many opening narrations in volume three.

VOLUME THREE: VILLAINS – 3 stars
The good:
- Villains gives us the luxury of actually intellectual the heroes’ mission from the first episode. In Generations, the heroes’ mission wasn’t clearly presented to us until the seventh episode. This volume is about trying to terminate The Formula from falling into the obnoxious hands. The Formula gives anyone abilities when it is injected, and it will eventually waste the world if it is allowed to be mass produced.
- Mohinder gives himself abilities, and then starts to mutate as a result. I concept this was a splendid scheme to give Mohinder motivation, as he needs to perfect The Formula in order to reverse his mutation. It was also a very human thing to do. If I had been studying people with clean powers, but didn’t have any myself, I would jump at any chance to gather one. Wouldn’t you?
- Once the volume found its footing, it was very streamlined and better paced than Generations. One complaint I retain hearing about Villains is that every episode had a different direction, and that Heroes kept creating and dropping storylines each episode. This is moral early on, but stops at about episode six. Starting with this episode, the writers discontinue screwing around with the storylines and got their act together.
- Angela manipulating Sylar into thinking she is his mother. This was lovely cleaver on Angela’s share, and showed that Sylar honest needed a parental figure to guide him. Sylar too showed that he is grand of compassion, but he composed has very grievous self-esteem even when he’s contented.
- Arthur Patrelli is the best villain yet. He save his wife into a coma, wants to extinguish his son Peter, wants to manipulate his other son Nathan into becoming a puppet president, steals any power he gets his hands on, killed Adam (he was really getting on my nerves by the time Generations ended), and the actor playing him is amazing.
- Daphene is a expansive addition to the Heroes gang, and her character becomes very well developed in Villains. Matt’s storyline was fine blah before he met Daphene, but after that the two worked very well together. I liked her relationship with Matt, and she gives you the most realistic sense of having a power out of all the heroes and villains this volume.
- Hiro being suspicious of Ando because of what Hiro saw in the future. Their arguments were a huge vehicle for giving Ando a screech, and it showed that he wasn’t fair a nameless tag-along like in seasons one & two. Hiro loosing his memory was a superior twist, and worked to display us a lot of his past. This storyline had lots of fun writing to complement it, so these guys on camouflage was usually a high point for Villains.
- This volume fixed Peter’s and Hiro’s powers to be more balanced with everyone else on the note. I know this divided fans, but they were unprejudiced getting too remarkable for them to be in any steady pain. Now Peter can only have one power at a time, and Hiro is powerless for a lot of volume four.
The bad:
- The creating and dropping of various storylines. I’ll go into more detail below.
- Tracy Strauss. She was a unpleasant, dreadful contrivance to replace Nikki. She’s a triplet sister of Nikki? Are you really going to insult with that kind of excuse? Her character overall is ravishing obliging, but wow that was dull. There was nothing to hint at this before, and they never even reflect about trying to gain the third sister. So it’s a lifeless character replacement AND a dropped storyline. Advance on writers, we’re not goldfish.
- Sylar’s Hunger. Why was this needed? Sylar’s reasons for taking peoples’ abilities was already well established. There’s no need to add another thing which was never mentioned or hinted to at all. It was an animated twist when Peter gained Sylar’s ability of view (and subsequently the Hunger) to set aside the world, but all it did was get Peter do wearisome things. The Hunger thing was dropped when the volume ended, and to add insult to injury, Peter didn’t even need Sylar’s power to put the world anyways. Nice going guys.
- Mohinder traps people in these cocoons for no reason what-so-ever. They never even give a throw away line to define it. He objective does it for to survey creepy, and nothing else. This is also dropped half blueprint through the volume.
- Heroes tries to link solar eclipses to people’s powers. This is atrocious. Heroes already showed that the main characters gained their abilities months before the first solar eclipse (season one episode “Six Months Ago”) . They exercise another solar eclipse to temporarily shut off everyone’s powers (which is actually entertaining), but those episodes are poorly written and are lovely lame overall.
- The Level 5 Prisoners. I was enraged about these guys when they broke out, but then they become a total non-issue the very next episode. Oh, and one of them is killed for no other reason than Sylar can’t control his Hunger. Please don’t originate me laugh Heroes.
- Peter’s sage was changed method too many times early on. First he was trapped in a Level 5 escapee’s body, then he was brought to the future and absorbed Sylar’s ability. He absorbed Sylar’s ability of belief to know how to change the timeline, but all it did was execute him unfavorable for no reason. He’s then establish in a chemically induced coma for a couple episodes, beats the crap out of Sylar, looses his all of his powers, and THEN the writers discontinuance messing with him. I bellow I almost got whiplash from his account changing so remarkable. Peter got better after they stopped messing with him, but he was glowing painful to glimpse for a while.
- Some characters acted slow procedure too many times. I already elaborate Peter’s predicament, but Claire and Nathan also do lots of insensible things in the first half of Villains. Claire becomes smarter as the Volume goes on, but Nathan is gorgeous insensible throughout.
- Maya. She was already useless and annoying enough in Generations, but she’s even more useless and more annoying in Villains. Every second she was on conceal I felt like offing myself.
- The writing and acting is very uneven in some parts of this volume. This happens mainly in early episodes, but also ruins the two share episode “The Eclipse”.
- What happened to Matt’s family? I already explained about Nathan’s family, Matt’s disappeared for this volume too. Peter also forgot about his girlfriend trapped in the future.
- They retconned Sylar and Elle into a relationship. Turns out that Elle, to notice on Sylar before he was unfriendly, was in a relationship with him. She was found out, and Sylar started killing people because of this. It’s not because of the well established reason of Sylar having mommy and daddy issues. The reason which is aged as one of the main state devices in this very same volume. If they had developed a relationship without the retconning, it wouldn’t have felt nearly as forced as it did.

VOLUME FOUR: FUGITIVES – 4 stars
The good:
- Fugitives is about the government rounding up people with abilities to retain the population genuine. Nathan, HRG, and unique villain Danko leading the operation, and this creates resent from Peter and Claire. Danko, while not as defective as Arthur, is certainly a man on a mission. - Fugitives goes relieve to the simpler record telling that the first season had. No jumping abet and forth through time like Villains did, and less storylines catch more veil time each episode. Plus no super-Peter and super-Hiro makes things more tense now.
- As I mentioned above, HRG and Nathan are leaders on the round-up. This causes major rifts between the Patrellis, and they become more fractured than ever. Slowly though, they approach together after going through hell and attend. This shows that the Patrellis, under all of the bizarre events and dislike that flies between them, have an unbreakable care for for each other.
- Claire feels guilty about HRG protecting her from Danko, so she forms this type of Underground Railroad for people with abilities. Sandra and Claire build a deep mother/daughter bond through these hard times, but the Bennets fracture apart after Sylar and Danko manipulate them. It creates a very well-organized inequity between them and the Patrellis.
- Daphene is pushed out of the arrangement early on. She was very excellent in Villains, but she feels forced and annoying in Fugitives. Her being shot also gave Matt fine motivation to resist the government too. She ultimately ends up stupid by the slay, so she can’t annoy us anymore.
- This volume explores Sylar’s actual family history. We collect to contemplate how washed up his father really is, and why Sylar was given up for adoption in the first area. Sylar’s last shreds of humanity are destroyed with this, and he goes on a crusade to slay the world after meeting his dependable father.

The bad:
- Mohinder is non-existent this volume. He has some shrimp parts, but for most of it he’s left in the murky. It seems like the writers had no plan what to do with him after he got powers, so they impartial decided not to do anything with him.
- There are very few secondary characters in this volume. With the previous ones almost upgraded to main characters this season, there isn’t distinguished extra to spice things up. Sylar had one that made no contrast, and Claire had one that ended up doing nothing in the slay too.
- For over half of this volume Tracy was locked in a cell, and didn’t accomplish grand of a incompatibility until the last few episodes. What a enormous method to under-use another character.

This is a wonderfully told myth filled with many dramatic moments,some profitable laughs, and a nice collect that abet add to the record feeling of the series. The relationship between Lafiel and Jinto is developed beautifully and found myself being pulled into their world almost completely absorbed in what was happening.

There is also Banner of the Stars 1 and 2 which focus mainly on the war itself, and the first recent in the series is plot to be released 9/30/06.
Finally a truly perfect series. Yes Crest of the Stars is perfection. The only flaw if you can call it that is the somewhat humdrum fable progression. I personally take the dash as it gives you time unprejudiced to acquire to know the characters. This series nearly perfectly balances spot and character development. The technology is believable and the cause for the resent of the rest of mankind towards the ahb is somewhat understandable. The music is amazing with the exception of the opening theme which fair seems out of space. The ending theme in particular deserves trace, I honestly didn’t realize that a male human swear in any language could sound so torn up. The anecdote is involving and is constantly changing course. Character development is where this series truly shines, both main characters are so believable that you could easily walking up to them on the street and carrying out a conversation. All in all you do not have an excuse not to win this series.

I yelp you what…secure this if you’re a fan of the Hulk alone. That in itself is reason enough to view this movie. I have forever loved all that the Hulk represents and how he rolls. But he about lost his mind in this movie! I loved it!!! Beyond that, splendid area, radiant fantasy cartoon babes abound, and as a Marine, I appreciated how Captain America and the military were portrayed as they went into battle against Nazis and position aliens in WWII. C,mon…site aliens, dream babes, Nazis, and the Hulk…what’re you waiting for? Relax the literary critic inside you and have some fun. Go. Rent.
Most agree that the myth was poor for this attractive release. I personally believe fragment 1 was bearable, but 2 was finish to unwatchable. What I DO however like about this release, is the quality Bluray brings. Those who deny you animation wont be enhanced by hi def? Demonstrate them this. Crisp lines, and solid colors all around. Very impressive to behold visually. And the sound was amazing. I only expend the two speakers on my TV, but the sound that came out of this release was unexcited gorgeous incredible, leaps and bounds over my regular DVDs.

“The Dark Crystal” is the heart of this movie, where on another world, there are two strange races — the enormous, gentle, peaceful Mystics, and the nasty, vulture-like, vicious Skekses. They are somehow connected to a massive crystal that was broken long ago, and now a shard is missing from it. What’s more, three suns are about to come into conjunction, and the shard has to be back in place.
The Mystics have cared for one of the last Gelflings, an orphan named Jen. As the conjunction approaches, they send him out to find the lost shard. Along the way, Jen finds new friends who assist him in his quest, including another Gelfling. But can they avoid the Skekses? And what will happen when the suns line up, and the crystal is completed?
These movies were created in whole by Jim Henson, and even in the darker moments, they have his unmistakeable stamp. More recent — and quite different in tone — is “Mirrormask,” which instead has the stamp of writer Neil Gaiman, and seems like a warped “Alice in Wonderland.” But Henson’s production company does a great job with all the weird special effects.
In “Mirrormask,” we’re introduced to Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), a young circus girl who longs for a “normal” life, and makes elaborate, otherworldly drawings. But one night her mother collapses, and needs life-saving surgery. The guilt-ridden Helena is suddenly whisked into a world that looks very like her drawings, where everyone has a mask — and the beautiful queen of light (who looks a lot like Helena’s mom) is in a coma.
Helena is determined to wake the queen, and gets juggler Valentine (Jason Barry) to accompany her on her quest for the mysterious Mirrormask. But the stakes become higher when the forces of darkness — and their eerie queen — target Helena, and she finds that a dark duplicate of herself has taken over her life. Now Helena must somehow defeat the dark forces, with her mother’s life — and her own — hanging in the balance.
All three of these movies are classics of one type or another, and each embraces a different kind of fantasy. One is about wanting to be swept into an idyllic fantasy life. One is entirely of another world. And one is about the dangers of the other world.
To top it off, three are coming-of-age stories, whether for a teenage girl or a Muppet Gelfling — they all focus on someone pursuing something that can save what is important to them, and growing as a person along the way. The scripting tends to be tight and a little wry. Sometimes it gets goofy, but well-acted (and in Bowie’s case, well-sung).
What’s more, the styles of each movie change: “Dark Crystal” is very fantastical and serious, even with some gross, dark parts, while “Labyrinth” is more kiddy-friendly and Muppety, with the little chivalrous fox (though Bowie’s tight pants are a BIG distraction). And “Mirrormask” has a different style altogether, with lots of shadowy buildings, eerie lighting, fleshy masks, wide bodies and tentacle-like limbs.
The “Jim Henson Fantasy Films” are a good collection of films, showing off Henson’s more fantastical side. Definitely worth seeing.
The Jim Henson company is following the same format they had done with The Storyteller Collection and are putting their three fantasy movies onto a single three disk collection. The movies are The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and MirrorMask. Two of these movies (Dark Crystal and Labyrinth) came from Jim Henson himself while MirrorMask is actually from Neil Gaiman, but produced by the Jim Henson company.
The movies themselves are great. The Dark Crystal takes you into a whole different world in a way that no other film has even come close to accomplishing. Labyrinth takes what Dark Crystal did a step further and makes a storybook fantasy come to life in an incredible way. MirrorMask is just as beautiful as the previous movies, but with more computer generated images than live action animatronics and sets.
What you are getting is essentially the previous releases of these movies collected into this one volume, including all of the awesome bonus features. They say this collection has been mastered in high definition, but I don’t know if that means a significant improvement in video quality from the original release or not. There are no additional features or commentaries on these disks from what you had before. Luckily the original releases came with some very nice documentaries and those are included here. This DVD set also comes with a booklet that is essentially a teaser for the upcoming Dark Crystal manga comic.
I am a little hard pressed to recommend this collection to anybody who already has the movies. It doesn’t offer an additional features that you can’t already get on the separate DVD’s, the whole “remastered” element is debatable, and the one and only thing that would have made this a decent buy (an informative insert booklet) turns out to be just advertising for future merchandise. Personally if you really want a high definition transfer wait until these movies are released on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (or whatever 1080p format that comes up). Now that the 25th Anniversary Editions of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are out I really see no reason to get this collection, and considering you can get all three DVD’s separately (with the same features, mind you) at a lower cost the choice is obvious.

While the previous review was honest that the special features, remastering, audio and video are identical in this novel release there are a couple of things this version of the Prisoner Megaset has that others don’t, but should have had from the net go. The first advantage is this collection has the disk detached in ten slim line cases, which cuts down on your shelf position considerably compared to previous releases and their tubby sized DVD cases. Also this release has a heavenly extensive PRINTED episode guide booklet that gives more than honest a synopsis. You also obtain a shrimp history of the making of that episode. Another extra is a fold out of the classic village device.

Now these extras may not be worth the double dipping for those who already bought the previous sets, but for those who never took the drop now is the time. Not only do you obtain the substantial features from the fresh position, but also stuff you can read and luxuriate in without having to set aside a disk in your player. I give the higher rating for this state, which is a more complete and more compact situation than all the rest (minus one for not getting it accurate the first time) .
Let’s say you’re a business that already has made a astonishing “40th Anniversary Version” of a DVD position with all the bells and whistles… now why should you then be allowed to get a different version of the same thing only a few years later?
A&E should be ashamed of themselves for doing what everyone lately is now doing: they’ve realized that (most) of the DVD buying public will acquire ANYTHING if you re-package it as a “Special Collection,” or a “Ultimate Collection,” “Director’s Reduce,” “Unrated Sever” or “Extended Gash.”

But in the case of “The Prisoner: The Complete Series Megaset (Collector’s Edition),” we are seeing the “40th Anniversary Spot”, unprejudiced with original packaging.
I have been surfing around as of leisurely and have found NOTHING to portray to me what’s included in the “fresh” package.
Any unusual interviews? I don’t know.
Any fresh lost footage? I don’t know.
Any kind of newer extras not on the “Anniversary version”? I don’t know.
Any other information anywhere online about what’s on it at all? I don’t know.
Remastered? They were the first time around.
Blu-Ray? Yes, but this could have been done with the same package.
You ogle where I’m going here. To quote the A&E website, who is also selling it, they are only saying “Within this complete 17-episode area, all is revealed. Or is it? ”
Now what kind of garbagey pap is that? What’s the technical waste? What’s included that is different from what’s already out there? It makes me wonder why they even needed to remake a “Collector’s Situation” in the first set.
It is essentially the “40th Anniversary” DVD box position, unbiased repackaged with a unusual situation of covers. As far as I can recognize from the item descriptions of both sets IT’S THE SAME ITEM THEY SOLD TO US A FEW YEARS Help.
To be unprejudiced, I was cheerful with that area as it fed my obsession, and I idea there was nowhere else to go with it. Watch FOR YOURSELF!…

This only leads me to Execute that they are neither adding nor subtracting anything to this release except to repackage a horse that’s been in the corral for over 3 years. But the inquire of remains: Why are they doing this?
Well, it’s simple: to sell DVD sets to lots of naive customers who didn’t know the “Anniversary Area” exists and then occupy essentially the SAME ITEM at a higher stamp!
Used box sets of the “40th” are blooming cheap fair now, so why pick the redesigned package? – except to perform A&E a few dollars more. Oh, and it’s no little coincidence that they are releasing it about the same time as the upcoming AMC series “Prisoner” reboot.
This is dismal, and once again, A&E should be ashamed of themselves.
And, to sidebar a moment about that original series…
Now, even though Ian McKellen has been chosen to play Number Two (and that’s okay), how can anyone define American actor Jim Caviezel as Number Six when we all know this was a British actor’s dream role?
I really can’t really name a movie or reveal he’s been in where he impressed me EXCEPT for his performance in “Frequency,” which according to the IMDB website, is all he’s ever done in the sci-fi realm.
I guess I’m picky when it comes to my choice of The Prisoner, because you would mediate they’d keep someone in there with a backbone – and DOESN’T Shout IN EVERY SINGLE ROLE HE’S BEEN IN. This potentially sounds Rotten.
I say give me Clive Owen, he seems fretful enough, and he proved to me he could tackle the complexities of sci-fi in his radiant role in “Children of Men.”
(Support to the DVD review, as I’m digressing too remarkable here… but to come by a bit personal now…)
Cash is king and AMC and A&E are warming their collective hands over the bones of the highly-protective-of-the-series Patrick McGoohan, whom they waited patiently until he died so that they could then originate mining his demonstrate that he created and wanted left untouched.
And to be unbiased, there are more than a few of us who’d also like to leave this kept pure as well. No, we didn’t need a remake or a reboot, and there are SO many people I know who’ve asked why do it at all?
The release of this DVD dwelling only goes to note me integrity, like clothing, can be shed for the accurate effect, and AMC and A&E will NEVER receive another consumer dollar from ME.
Once again, since there are no technical details available anywhere except from what I found on this very website, I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to seize that it’s the same dwelling unbiased re-packged to deceive people, and because of that I’m giving this one star.
THERE IS NO INFORMATION AVAILABLE ABOUT WHAT’S ON IT THAT’S Fresh, so why award a company clearly out for profit?
For the last time, and I’ll be just, it won’t be the last time for me… A&E should BE ASHAMED OF ITSELF for doing this.

Each version of Dickens’ famous yule story has its fans, and the ‘38 A CHRISTMAS CAROL is no exception. This 69 minute Loew’s release features an interesting company behind Reginald Owen as Ebenezer Scrooge. Gene and Kathleen Lockhart are Bob and Mrs. Cratchit and their daughter June plays a Cratchit child. Leo G. Carroll is Marley’s ghost and Ann Rutherford portrays “Christmas Past.” Silent-era clown Billy Bevan, who also lent his raspy basso voice to early Looney Tunes shorts, appears as “Leader of Street Watch.”
In the romantic comedy CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945), Sydney Greenstreet is third billed behind Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan. Miss Stanwyck’s character was based on Gladys Taber, a ladies magazine columnist who lived on a Connecticut farm. John Dehner cameos as a state trooper. Dehner began as a Disney animator, then appeared often on radio– he was Paladin on HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL. Other cast members: Reginald Gardiner, Una O’Conner and Frank Jenks. Also here is “ditzy blonde” specialist Joyce Compton. (To see Miss Compton at her nuttiest, check out Eddie Sutherland’s 1940 turn-of-the-century farce, THE VILLAIN STILL PURSUED HER, with Alan Mowbray as the baddie and Buster Keaton playing his opposite.)
IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE (1947) was the very first ALLIED ARTISTS release. This company was formed when MONOGRAM Pictures and two smaller outfits merged. Frank Capra was slated to direct until producer-director Roy Del Ruth purchased screen rights to this story of a homeless man and his friends who take advantage of a manson left empty while the owners are away for the holidays. The fine cast includes Don DeFore, Ann Harding, Charles Ruggles, Victor Mature, Gale Storm, Grant Mitchell, Edward Brophy and Alan Hale Jr.
Ernst Lubitsch’s holiday romance THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) was a first screen adaptation of Hungarian playwright Miklós László’s “Perfumerie” (aka “Illatszertár”). This storyline was later used for the 1949 musical, IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME and in 1998 for YOU’VE GOT MAIL. Director Lubitsch, who also worked in a Budapest shop as a boy, called this his favorite movie. Unlike most productions, all scenes were filmed sequentially. Cast includes Margaret Sullavan, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut and in a walk-on, Sarah Edwards.
Christmas in Connecticut is a great holiday romantic comedy about a young woman who writes for a magazine geared to homemakers. She claims to be married, have a child and live on a farm in Connecticut, but is actually a single, childless, apartment dweller. The problems start when her publisher wants her to give a recent war hero a home for the holidays on her Connecticut farm. She consents to marry a long-time boyfriend who actually has a farm in Connecticut to save her editor from losing his job. They arrange to be married on the farm, but the judge doesn’t get the job done before the war hero arrives. That creates some awkward moments. The housekeeper tends babies for women who are working during the war, and they are supposed to be “the child” but with a different baby showing up each day confusion ensues. Stanwyck’s character, of course, begins to fall for the hero, who is also falling for her but thinks she is a married woman and is trying to respect that. It is all good, clean fun and “What a Christmas!”
The Shop Around the Corner is a very clever comedy whose theme has been repeated in other movies, as mentioned in Annie’s review. Clara is falling for the man with whom she corresponds on purely intellectual subjects. She has never met him. At the same time she gets a job in a leather goods shop and cannot get along with her boss (Jimmy Stewart). You can figure it out from there. Delightful fun. Either one of these two movies is worth the price of this package.
It Happened on 5th Avenue is a pleasant film. The owner of a 5th Avenue mansion is wintering elsewhere and a hobo helps himself to the house. He invites in others who need a place to stay in the housing crunch following WWII. Without their knowledge, one of their fellow tenants is actually the owner, who hides his identity to see what is going on in his home.
Everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol, so I won’t elaborate on this one. This is a wonderful set of holiday movies at a price that can’t be beat. If you don’t like black and white movies this may not satisfy you, but the stories are great and my family really enjoys them. The only complaint I have is that they are double-sided disks and I prefer single sided.

I like Tony Bourdain! His prove is so appealing, educational, and a laugh! He obvious helps but North American minds to work in appreciating cultures were as most people would be ignorant and dismissive. I can’t wait til he gets to season 10! Never win sick of this exhibit or his experiences! Go Tony Go!
Beware! Teach of this DVD collection is big. However, beware! The production quality of the DVD collection is extremely dreadful. The programs blur or halt altogether. The commands do not operate. Sometimes you are able to play a program, other times they will not play. Very inconsistent and unreliable. I ordered this collection twice to be definite that I did not unprejudiced receive a ghastly disc position. The same unreliability and play inconsistencies applied to the second collection, which Amazon sent to me free of charge to replace the first ordered collection.
